Laser Tweezers, Tractor Beam's Little Brother, Fact & Fiction

If you happen to be a science fiction fan, then laser tractor beam force fields found on Star Trek are  a familiar technology. Imagine having the ability to capture and move objects with laser light. Great special effects for science fiction movies, but fiction often influences the imagination of scientists and engineers to develop fictional ideas into reality. A perfect example of converting fiction to factual tools was applied when scientists and engineers developed the laser tweezers. Now they can capture and manipulate nanometer scale particles to enhance medical diagnostics and fight diseases on a cellular level. Laser Shows Attract New Cruise Liner Passengers

It seems that cruise ship holidays have been on the decline for sometime. People either no longer trust the industry or cannot afford a cruise ,specially since the market meltdown in 2008. It certainly doesn't help to have an Italian Captain show off by taking a shortcut , hit a reef and abandon ship, leaving some passengers to perish as a result of his neglect. The majority of passengers who frequent cruise ships are retired couples or singles looking for fun. Laser Magic Shows

It was only a matter of time before people started using laser pointers and other specialized hand held lasers to perform slight of hand magic tricks. Laser Pointers & Non Lethal Weapons

The police and military have always tried to limit their responses to crowd control and rioting. They have an arsenal of non lethal weapons such as water cannons, rubber bullets, shotguns that fire bean bags, millimeter wave technology that heats your skin at long distances, high power ultrasonic emitters that make you lose your balance,  pepper spray and Taser guns for close range. Now a new weapon has been added, a laser based device, designed using a  diode pumped, 532 nanometer green output to dazzle people long enough to take action. A company called Laser Energenics has come up with two dazer laser products, the Defender and the Guardian. The Guardian has a range of  1-300 meters and the Defender has a range of 1-2400 meters. They claim both weapons are eye safe beyond 1 meter according to ANSI ( American National Standard Institute (ANSI) safety standard Z136.1) laser safety standards. It seems a bit Ironic that the US federal government has outlawed the importation of laser pointers with power levels exceeding 5 milliwatts in the name of homeland security yet they allow their own forces to wield lasers.
There are hand held solid state green (up to 1000 milliwatts) and violet (455 nanometer) lasers (up to 2000 milliwatts) manufactured in China that make the Defender and Guardian lasers look like toys in comparison. Even though those laser torches are not permitted to be sold or imported in many countries, they still make it through the mail and past Customs agents. Those handheld, high power lasers are the size of a flashlight and pose a real threat to air traffic, hence heavy fines and prison sentences follow anyone caught interfering with any aircraft. If you do a Google or Youtube search of "How to make a handheld laser torch" you can probably find plans or somebody willing to sell you parts to make your own. Laser are everywhere, so use common sense and beware of deviant individuals who pose a terrorist threat.

New Laser Technique May Help Find Supernova

I'm always amazed by all the applications for which  laser can be used.When a supernova explodes, it it spreads matter in a vast area of space. The resulting mass  cools and eventually forms other stars and planets, that contain proof of that supernova's existence.
One single atom of a certain isotope of hafnium found on Earth would prove that a supernova once exploded near our solar system. The problem is how to find such an atom - among billions of others. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have developed a laser technique that, in combination with standard techniques, may be able to do the job.

Researchers Achieve Quantum Teleportation Over 10 Miles of Empty Space

I always appreciated Star Trek since it stretched your imagination by taking current research and pushing it into science fiction fact. Teleportation being one of those sci-fi capabilities in Start Trek appears to be another reality in our own time. Scientists all over the globe are playing with lasers and optics to create quantum entanglements between particles. When you act upon one particle, the other particle reacts, no matter how far away it is located from the other particle, due to quantum entanglement. Einstein called this "spooky action at a distance " and it's one of the unsolved mysteries which he failed to formulate a theory of connectivity "the theory of how everything is interconnected on an atomic level". In China some scientists have succeeded in affecting quantum entangled particles that were separated by ten miles, a new distance record.

Laser Jacket Worn By Bono of U2 Band

I could hardly believe my eyes when I first saw the jacket Bono was wearing. I had seen laser gloves worn by DJ's and thought it was an attention getter but Bono takes the stage with 240 laser pointers sewn into the profile of his leather jacket. Needless to say, Bono was easy to spot on stage from wherever you were in the audience. I wonder if the other band members were forced to use laser safety eye glasses when Bono wears this "Look at me" jacket. I also have to wonder If any audience members might require protection as well. In this era of litigation over laser safety, I think Bono was risking getting sued for eye damage. It might be less cool to wear E-Wire but much safer than lasers. I had mental images of stray cats and dogs chasing all the dots Bono's jacket was projecting.
